A hard sell for realtors is a house in a new development. If trees are present, they are often immature and the subdivision looks cold and impersonal. Trees are integral to the character of a property, bringing shade and natural beauty to established neighborhoods. At the same time — like all living things — these species of flora begin to decay after living out the span of their years. As a result, root networks deteriorate, and limbs and trunk start to rot. Depending on the size and location of the tree, the house or structure may be in serious danger. Alternatively, the tree might be blocking needed light for other vegetation and you may even find out that its better to have your tree removed.
Signs That the End Is Near
Trees come in myriad species. Some survive less than fifty years while others can thrive for thousands. Determining age can be done counting growth rings (with each ring representing a full year). However, the rings appear almost exclusively in climates that experience the cycle of seasons. Tropical climes, then, pose a challenge when measuring a tree’s longevity. Dying trees will drop their leaves during the growth season. Alternatively, the leaves or needles will be discolored during this time. Branches shed their bark when the life of a tree is near the end. Fungus is common, as well. Bark on the trunk gets brittle; carpenter ants are attracted to the tree; and roots take on a slimy appearance.
Can Trees Die from Other Causes?
A tree’s mortality is subject to other factors aside from old age. Disease is a common killer. Like people, trees have immune systems. When immunity is compromised, disease can find its way in. Water, light and nutrients from the soil and surroundings work in tandem for optimal health. When one or more elements is lacking in proper proportion, resistance to disease is lowered. Fungal decay can rot the wood pulp; bacterial and viral infections can cause sap “bleeding” at the trunk; ash dieback can produce lesions that are subject to infections. Insect infestations and weather disasters will also compromise a tree’s vitality.
How Is a Tree Removed?
Extraction of a dead or ailing tree from its location can be quick and simple…or prolonged and challenging. The size of the plant and the depth of its roots determine the nature of the removal procedure. The process can be dangerous for the tree specialists if power lines or other hazardous infrastructure is nearby. Tree removal in Elgin should be performed by certified and experienced technicians. Large trees should have their biggest limbs cut before the bulk of the tree is separated from the stump. The trunk is cut down in pieces and either left for the owner or pulverized and removed. Stump removal is a separate procedure and normally an additional charge. Because trees vary in size and difficulty, prices for expulsion can range from as little as $150 to $1,500 or more. Most service providers prefer to save the tree but sometimes removal is necessary. …
